Taking your dog for a walk in the rain or riding in the snow is great fun and a great way to keep your dog active during the winter. But adventuring with your cubs in cold, wet conditions has its own challenges. Here are some tips we’ve learned to help keep our dogs comfortable, happy, and healthy on winter walks.

Factors such as breed, size, age, coat type, activity level and metabolism determine a dog’s ability to function in cold temperatures. See your dog in the cold near home before taking him on a long winter trip. Watch for signs of discomfort such as trembling, curling up, refusing to walk or picking/licking your feet. You know your dog best, so use your best judgment to decide when it’s appropriate to take him on a trip and when it’s best to leave him at home. Being open to changes in plans is important when dog hunting. If conditions are harsher than expected, you can turn back and switch to plan B. Just like us, dogs have good days and bad days – sometimes they’ll be happy to trudge through the snow hourly and other times they will do so giving birth first. The parking lot is even invisible. Don’t be out of luck if things don’t feel safe, especially if you’re more than an hour away from your car. It’s better to cut your trip short and go for a sheltered hike or enjoy the comforts of home than to make a mistake in the winter that could lead to serious injury or even death.

Walking on snow or ice may seem exciting at first, but it’s best to bring something to put on your dog’s paw if he starts to show signs of restlessness. Prolonged exposure to cold surfaces (or deicing salt) can damage your dog’s paws and lead to cracks, blisters and even hypothermia. Dog boots are a simple solution. Your marriage may be quite funny at first, but they will soon forget that they are being treated when something more interesting catches their attention. If the boots don’t fit your dog or you’re having trouble keeping them on your best friend’s feet, try Musher’s Secret Waxinstead. Some dogs – especially those with longer or textured coats – are susceptible to getting snow or ‘snowballs’ stuck to their rumps, ruts and legs. As these snowballs grow in size, they become heavy and can pull on your dog’s sensitive skin. Snow accumulating on your child’s body will quickly chill them, and ice balls stuck between their toes can tear them. To prevent this, stop and check on your dog every now and then. Squeeze large snowballs between your fingers to avoid painful rubbing, and gently massage the fur to remove as much snow as possible. To avoid the dreaded snowballs, you can try pre-treating problem areas by smoothing the fur with coconut oil cooking spray. Make sure you test a small area before starting to make sure your dog is not allergic. If snowballs are a problem for your dog, clothing that covers the belly and legs is a great choice.

It’s best to familiarize yourself with the terrain before taking your dog for a walk in winter. That way, you’ll know if there are steep drops, frozen lakes, or potential buffer terrain before letting your dog off-leash (when allowed). If you’re going somewhere new with your puppy, keep them on a leash or be 100% sure they will obey voice commands to ensure safety. Know the buffer zone danger flags and avoid going out onto frozen lakes unless you have extensive experience assessing ice. Pockets of snow falling around trees (tree holes) can kill a dog if it gets stuck in them. To minimize this risk, keep your dog on a leash or within sight if there is heavy, new snowfall and there are large trees around so you can quickly dig them out in an emergency.

Whether you’re hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing with your dog, he’s sure to get excited and work hard to keep up with you. Make sure your companion stays hydrated by giving them water throughout the trip. If you really want, you can even share a small amount of the electrolyte mixture with your dog. If you are an avid water drinker, you can train your dog to drink by tilting and spraying a small stream of water at an angle.

Winter Sports With A Dog
Your body burns more calories to stay warm in the winter, and so does your dog. Winter sports are often considered vigorous physical activity, so be sure to bring plenty of snacks to keep you and your dog fed. Carry a sealed container of our dog food in the car during the winter as a precaution. Pack lots of educational gifts to reward them for sticking around and sticking with you throughout the journey. If it’s cold outside, your body temperature will drop quickly when you stop moving. It’s a good idea to bring a pad (depending on your dog’s size) to insulate you and your dog from the ground during breaks. The foam is a bit bulky but lightweight and fits easily into your backpack. No matter how cold-tolerant your dog is, he can still catch a cold when he stops moving – especially when wet. We use car dryer sheets to dry our dog during the fall and winter months. Remove wet belts, jackets or boots and pay special attention to drying your legs, feet, abdomen and groin as these areas tend to get wet and dry the most. We always give our dog water to ensure he is hydrated when we get in the car and manners to reinforce good behavior and cooperation with our post-walk routine.
