Dog Friendly Southern California Beach Bolsa Chica State Beach (near Huntington Beach) Overall Rating: 7/10 Region: Los Angeles Area Dog Policy: Dogs are allowed in campgrounds, but not on state beaches. However, they are allowed on several miles of beach trails, and Huntington Dog Beach is a little further down the coast.

This state beach stretches three miles from Seal Beach to the Huntington Beach City Pier. A bike path connects to Huntington State Beach, seven miles south. Across the street from Bolsa Chica is the 1,000-acre Bolsa Chica Ecological Preserve, managed by the Department of Fish and Game. The campsite basically consists of a lot of parking by the beach, but a popular one. It’s a short walk into the Bolsa Chica State Preserve, a 1.5-mile loop that provides an escape from the parking lot and entrance to the 530-acre nature preserve, complete with herons, pelicans and lots of shorebirds. Our lifesaver in the summer.

This campsite has a maximum stay of 7 days in summer and a maximum stay of 14 days in winter. Surf fishing is popular for bass, cabezons, small sharks and snapper. There is also the occasional grunion, a small fish that spawns in abundance on the sandy beaches of Southern California.

San Elijo State Beach (in Cardiff by the Sea) Overall Rating: 9/10 Region: San Diego and Environment Dog Policy: Leashed pets are allowed in the campground, but not in some areas of the beach. However, Del Mar City Beach is a short distance from the beach and has a dog section that stretches from 29th Street to Solana Beach.

These are campsites on top of a cliff, and about half of the sites have sea views. Swimming and surfing are good, the sea is nearby for snorkeling and diving. What more could you ask for? Well, firstly, how are there not many trains? Yes, the train tracks are nearby and the trains run several times a day. So much for peace of mind.

Anyway, it’s a beautiful beach just north of the coastal city of Cardiff. The nearby San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach is an ecological reserve. Although this is a densely developed area, there are many egrets, occasional egrets and other seabirds. Reservations are usually required to ensure seating between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend.
