We have always hesitated to travel through the Zion National Park area on our trips to Utah because, like most national parks, Zion is not “dog friendly”. On our last trip we decided we wanted to give it a try and stayed at the pet friendly Zion White Bison. Located a few kilometers from the western entrance to the park, we used it as a base camp to explore the park and the dog-friendly areas on both sides of the entrance. All I can say is I’m glad we decided to go, and while there aren’t many dog activities in the park – THERE ARE outside.

We stayed at the Zion White Bison Pet Rock Lodge and loved it. Zion White Bison was one of America’s top five resorts, with pet carts, tipis, and cliff dwellings, and I can’t wait to plan a trip! Although Zion National Park doesn’t have many pet-friendly trails, the drive through the park is beautiful, and there are plenty of dog-friendly activities on both sides of the park.

Snow Canyon State Park – (note that there is a park entrance fee for most trails) We loved how the rock throughout the park was red and saw countless trails, caves, petrified sand dunes, petroglyphs, and small canyons.

Pink Coral Sand Dunes State Park – (entrance fee) These dunes are estimated to be 10,000 to 15,000 years old and you can rent ATVs or sand boards here to ride the dunes, but we just like to walk and play. in the sand!

The Paria Canyon-Vermilion Rocks / Kanab Area Wilderness is a 112,500 acre wilderness filled with hiking trails, canyons, rock formations, and carved hills, and the possibilities for dog-friendly adventures are endless! It was a little wet, the roads were a little washed out, and the canyons were flooded when we visited, so we had to make some last minute changes to our plans – but there is no shortage here!

After days spent exploring, we would return to our cliff house and soak up the sunset from the rooftop hot tub. Zion’s white bison are special and even have their own herd of white bison you can visit (a calf was born two days after we left). The white bison is a very rare and sacred animal, and a generation ago one in 10 million bison was born white. Today, one in a million is considered white. The resort aims to be a sanctuary for these sacred animals and it was so fun to spend time with them!
