One of the best ways to explore Brisbane’s city center is to follow the Riverwalk, a pedestrian walkway suspended above the Brisbane River. Enjoy views from the trail, the historic bridge, the city skyline and the city’s suburbs.

Also known as the New Farm Riverwalk, the route starts at New Farm in the Riverview area and follows the east bank of the river to Howard Street Wharf. It is then possible to continue along the river on the Riverside Walk to the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens.
Best of all, dogs on leashes can go with you. Although you are asked not to block the popular route, it is also shared with regular cyclists, runners and walkers. Think Howard Street Wharves for a drink or bite to eat, dogs at Felon’s Brewing, and cozy beans dotting the lawn.
Brisbane City Botanic Gardens is a green oasis close to the skyscrapers of the Brisbane CBD, the historic gardens occupy the southern tip of the CBD Peninsula. Unlike the larger Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens, gentle dogs are welcome at these botanical gardens.
Garden highlights include a palm-lined pond, a bamboo pavilion and a rainforest section. It’s worth a stroll to the west end of the garden, home to the imposing colonial buildings of Parliament and the Old Government House. Even if you don’t have a pet when visiting the interior, the exterior facades are still impressive.
Dog Friendly Places To Stop On A Sydney To Brisbane Road Trip With Your Best Furry Friend
The city’s Botanic Gardens are easily accessible on foot via the riverside promenade or across Southbank’s car-free Goodwill Bridge. The nearest marine terminal is Riverside Marine Terminal.
Another popular pocket of parkland in Brisbane’s city center is the Southbank Precinct, across the river from the CBD on the south-west side of the city.
One of the most popular attractions in Southbank is the huge swimming lake, which is naturally off-limits to dogs, along with the many museums and galleries in the area.
Instead, when visiting with your dog, don’t miss a walk in the rainforest or the nearby Nepal Peace Pagoda, which was relocated after World Expo 88. Also, take a walk along the river bank. At the northern end of South Beach is a famous Brisbane landmark.
Camping With Dogs
Brisbane’s most beautiful public transport is Brisbane River Ferries and CityCats. And after a successful test, dogs are welcome if they follow a few rules.
First, dogs will only be allowed outside of peak hours, from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and then from 3:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. on weekdays. It is best to go by boat between 8:30 AM and 3:30 PM or anytime during weekends. Your dog should also be leashed and sedated, or alternatively, in a closed carrier and placed on the floor outside.
This primarily applies to the Cityhopper service, which runs every half hour between North Quay and Sydney Street, making it easy for tourists to travel between the city center tourist attractions.
A great way to combine views of Brisbane’s dog-friendly city center is to stop at New Farm at the start of the Riverwalk, walk along the Riverwalk, stroll through the Botanic Gardens to Southbank, and then hop back on the ferry for free. . Sydney Street Ferry Terminal.
Pet Friendly Brisbane
About 15 minutes west of central Brisbane lies the beautiful Coot-Ta Mountain Forest. This conservancy is the largest in Brisbane with over 1600 hectares of eucalyptus forest and is a great place for a nature day trip.
While dogs are not allowed in the nearby Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, leashed dogs are welcome in the Mt Coot-tha Forest, a popular summit location with panoramic views of Brisbane and numerous walking trails.
One of the most popular trails is the Summit Trail, which starts at the JC Slaughter Falls picnic area. The moderately graded trail is 1.2 miles each way and climbs below the Summit Lookout. Another popular track is the shorter Simpson Falls Track, only 650m long, although unfortunately the falls were completely dry when we visited.
There is no shortage of tracks with over 50 tracks. Just check which runways that were closed due to hurricane damage in 2022 are currently open.
Ten Of The Best Day Trips From Brisbane
Head north of Brisbane to Bribie Island for a dog-friendly day out with your pup. At the end of Moreton Bay, this island is easily accessible via a transport bridge, meaning there is no need to worry about boats.
Bribie Island’s highlight for dogs is its lovely off-leash dog beach. Stretching between Worim Beach and Red Beach, the dog run stretches for over 4km and is perfect for a long beach walk. Arguably the best dog-friendly beach in all of Brisbane, with its beautiful golden sands.
The flossing area is very easy to find in Worim at the end of Lowry St where there is a dog washing station with a hose. Worim Beach is known as a beach beach, although the waves were small on the day I visited.
Alternatively, head to Praia Vermelha where the waters are calmer. A few hundred yards east of the nearest parking lot is the beach and then the start of the Leash Room. There are clear maps of destinations online as well.
The Best Dog Friendly Travel Destinations In Australia
In addition to Lymph Beach, there is a fenced dog park at Worim Beach and Bellara Beach, as well as the Sylvan Beach Esplanade.
For food, check out Bribie Island RSL Club on the way to Red Beach, one of the few RSL clubs with a dog-friendly outdoor dining area.
Bribie Island isn’t the only dog-friendly island near Brisbane. While some islands, such as Moreton Island, which is mostly a national park, are dog-friendly, there are other islands that are easily accessible by boat with your dog.
Perhaps the most popular is North Stradbroke Island, where dogs are allowed in your car on the ferry as well as the water taxi (passenger ferry). Once on Stradbroke Island, there are dog-friendly campsites and other pet-friendly accommodations.
Take A 900 Km Doggo Friendly Island Road Trip
Alternatively, for a quick island tour, a relatively hidden gem is tiny Kuchimudlo Island. This island is only a 10 minute ferry ride from Victoria Point on the Amity Trader. There were many dogs on the boat when we visited and dogs were not required to be on a leash. The ferry also operates frequently.
Once on Kuchimudlo Island, there is a trendy beach just 5 minutes from the boat dock. Dogs are not allowed on the beach on either side of the boat dock, follow the path behind the beach on the west side. About 100 meters from the boat ramp, there is a stretch that is about 200 meters from the beautiful sandy beach.
However, the rules change from month to month due to the presence of migratory birds. In winter, from May to August, dogs can be removed from the rash throughout the day. From November to February, dogs can be off-leash after 5pm and before 9am, and in spring and autumn, dogs must be on a leash.
There are plenty of dog-friendly breweries around Brisbane, both in the city center and in the suburbs.
Top Dog Friendly Islands In Queensland To Visit
The easiest place to get to from the City Hopper ferry is Seafoot Brewery near the Holman Street ferry terminal. They offer a variety of beers and beers on tap, as well as an extensive food menu. Please note that the brewery does not have an outdoor area, so dogs are only allowed in the small area near the entrance. Only a few of the tables at the edge of the area can serve food. If you’re visiting on a weekend, we recommend arriving early.
We also visited the All Inn Brewery in Banjo, not far from the famous Nuddy Dog Beach. No food is served on site, so dogs are allowed in the brewery and outside, including many outdoor tables. Instead, there’s a rotating menu of food trucks during popular seasons. On our Sunday afternoon visit there was a Japanese hot dog food truck as well as live music.
Other dog-friendly breweries in Brisbane include Felons Brewing in Howard Street Wharves, Hope and Anchor in Paddington, Green Beacon Brewing in Tenerife, Yard Dogs in Fortified Valley and Scottish Brewdog Dogtap in Murray.
