Dog Friendly Vacations Upstate Ny – Like many busy pet parents, I try to find time to take my son Zoe on dog walks. Growing up in an outdoorsy family, my childhood was full of adventures and road trips. I can’t wait to relive some of those memories with my own fur baby. So when we were offered the chance to break away from the Getaway rental company for the weekend, I was about halfway through!
I’ve always heard of people going to upstate New York, but I’ve never been there. That all changed in the spring of 2019 when I had the opportunity to stay overnight at a Getaway cabin in the Catskill Mountains.

We Went There: Upstate Glamping
Together with my colleague Danielle and her dog Sawyer, we unpacked our messages from the office and headed north to get away from our “always” mentality and focus on the beautiful view- clouds and fresh air. from the mountains.
We started the journey to the hut on Friday morning. Going to the office on a Friday morning is more relaxing than usual, that’s for sure.
The foggy day made for a beautiful 200 mile drive north as the sound of our ride played and the fresh air flowed through the car windows. The dog loves to sleep in the back seat, and Zoe even made herself in my clothes.
Our four-legged travelers really benefit from comfort food, especially on long trips. My only regret was not being with Zoe d on the trip up north.

When we arrived at our dog-friendly cottage, the dogs couldn’t be more excited to explore, so we gave them a tour (or as they say they led us) before’ to go to our small and cozy room.
We were surprised by the smell of new wood when we entered our respective homes, and the real windows lit up the whole place. The queen-sized bed was topped with freshly laundered sheets, and small s’mores and a letter welcomed us into our home for the next few days.
There is a small kitchen stocked with all the necessary kitchen utensils, a small dining room with snacks for purchase, and a private bathroom with a shower with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.
After unpacking our bags (check out our travel stuff here), we got back in the car and headed north to Albany, New York for coffee and breakfast. We had not originally planned to visit Albany, but since we had never been there and it was so close, the explorers convinced us to fight the capital.

After a quick coffee refill at Stacks Espresso Bar – a local, dog-friendly coffee shop with a variety of teas and coffees, pastas and even alternative milk alternatives – we headed to We walked around the city.
Many of Albany’s restaurants, shops, and cafes welcome well-behaved and leashed pups, and this beautiful state capital has plenty to explore! We walked down historic Lark Street, where the old shops and buildings reminded us of New York. We then went to the famous New York Department of Education building, which opened in 1912. We didn’t get a chance to go inside the building, but we were in awe of the 30-foot tall marble columns. meters in front. The dogs had fun playing with us in the nearby grassy park before we went to the Iron Gate Café for dinner.
Located next to the 1890 Holroyd Mansion, the Iron Gate Restaurant offers fresh food and vegan options, as well as a dog-friendly outdoor patio. It was a great dining experience with two well-behaved pups, although it can be more difficult with larger and more active pups as customers have to pass through the open air to enter the house. dinner.
I ordered the Vermonster sandwich – a turkey sandwich with cheddar cheese, apple, lettuce and maple nuts – and Danielle got the Buddha plate made with sweet potato, avocado, spinach, broccoli, quinoa and tofu. We were half way through lunch when it started to rain.

We gathered the food, got the dog, and tried to get to the car before the rain started. Raising animals isn’t perfect, but creating perfect moments is. We finished our meal on the side of the car, laughed at our dog’s muddy feet and messy hair, and headed back south.
Fortunately for us, the spring rain did not last long and the rain caught us within an hour. So we continued with our plan to visit Kaaterskill Falls.
The first route to Kaaterskill Falls is on foot. This is an easy and dog friendly hike that takes about 2 hours return.
We left our car in the NY-23A parking lot, on the corner of the road. A small waterfall at the beginning overlooked the humble and awe-inspiring scene before us. Although steep and rocky in places, the 2.5 mile hike is worth exploring. A two-stage waterfall – the highest in New York state – marks the end of the trail and gives us the opportunity to rest and enjoy the achievement.

Zoe and Sawyer are total warriors. I highly recommend this hike for parents with dogs who are used to exploring the outdoors, but be careful with small dogs as they can slip and get stuck between some of the rocks. his feet. If you’re walking, bring extra water for your four-legged travelers, and take breaks along the way to give them a little time to catch their breath (and yours, too!).
After the tour, we went to the nearby Fortune Garden Chinese Restaurant to pick up some food to take back to our accommodation. We fed our dogs separately before dinner. The sweet and sour chicken and Dr. Pepper has never been a better and more satisfying couple.
After all our faces were stuffed with food, we lit a fire to enjoy dessert: a batch of s’mores waiting for us when we arrived at our cabin. Even with well-behaved puppies, I recommend keeping them on a short leash to prevent them from catching fire (and the s’mores ingredients – chocolate is poisonous to dogs! ). As Danielle and I roasted marshmallows we talked about the events of the busy day. Before we knew it, it was night and it was time for us and our kids to head to our cabin for a good night’s sleep.
The next morning, I woke up in a big window facing the pine trees, it was a breath of fresh air compared to the view (and a blaring alarm) used to it! Zoe took her time crawling out of the soft comforter while I prepared a quick and easy DIY Chewy Eats snack for us to go.

While we waited for the food in our fridge, we all walked around the grounds of the hotel to enjoy the view and the peace. The ride was relatively quiet and peaceful, and the crunching and rattling of the dog’s paws filled the atmosphere. We didn’t see many people on the road near the cottage, but a few visitors from afar moved into their home away from home for the weekend with furry, four-legged memes. We waved to the friendly dog parents before heading back to our room to get ready for the day.
After packing our poles and packing our backpacks, we headed out for breakfast. Following Getaway’s suggestion, we headed to Circle W Market for fresh food and drinks.
This cute little market has a small outdoor seating area, perfect for furry travelers, and the sweet and savory options are a great way to start the day. We enjoyed turkey panini, waffles and avocado toast, as well as cold beer, lemonade, lime juice and matcha lattes.
Before adopting Zoe in 2017, I always heard that pugs are often not the most athletic dogs and get tired easily because of their short noses. Boy, my pug proved them wrong! Always two steps ahead of me – literally and figuratively – Zoe led our group of four on a five-mile hike up Overlook Mountain.
Best Places To Stay On A New York Road Trip
Although the terrain is smaller than Kaaterskill Falls and more gravelly, the hike to the top of Overlook Mountain is a bit more challenging. We had to change our speed to overcome the constant incline, but the fresh air and thick fog filled us with dreams and curiosity. And that sense of curiosity does not disappoint!
