We were on a mission to find the best off-leash dog beaches in Southern California, and to our surprise, our choices were very limited. There are plenty of off-leash beaches, but we have pups who really like to run free in and out of the water, so off-leash beaches are a must.
We’ve explored all of Southern California’s off-leash dog beaches over the past few months and listed them from our favorites to our least favorites.
Huntington Dog Beach was without a doubt our favorite off-leash dog beach in Southern California, and we would come here every weekend if we lived nearby. The dog beach area is clearly marked and we had no problem finding a parking space since we arrived before noon.
The Ultimate Guide To Dog Friendly Beaches Near Sydney
Its length, cleanliness and shallow waters provided a perfect environment for our dogs. It was Zooey’s first time walking in the water alone and she was having so much fun running in and out of the water.
A wonderful non-profit group manages this beach and does a great job maintaining an “off-leash” condition so our pups can run and play freely.
We were staying at the Hilton Beachfront Resort in Santa Barbara and a friend suggested we visit Hendry’s Beach. Crystal loved the view here.
The spectacular cliffs were beautiful and there was plenty of space on the beach for everyone. The off-leash area begins in the east and has clearly marked signs to guide you in the right direction.

We saw a restaurant there along the beautiful Arroyo Burro; However, they do not accept dogs. Don’t worry, Santa Barbara has plenty of other dog-friendly options.
Ocean Avenue and Scenic Road, Carmel, CA 93922 Parking: Yes, but very limited Street parking: Yes, but very limited Bathrooms: Yes
This was the first off-leash beach we visited and the farthest from LAX. For some reason, this dog beach is always listed as a Southern California area; However, Carmel is actually part of Northern California and is much closer to San Francisco than to Los Angeles.
We decided to go ahead and include it on our list because Carmel-by-the-Sea is a dog paradise and ranked #1 for the Most Dog-Friendly Town in America .
Edmonds Off Leash Dog Beach
We were staying at a dog friendly hotel so we decided to walk to Caramel Beach as parking is extremely limited. The scenery here is spectacular and the powdery white sand felt great on our feet.
Kuma especially loved the sand here and was delighted when his little paws touched the sand. We think the white sand reminded them of Florida.
This was the busiest dog beach we visited. We arrived around 9am and were surprised to find the parking lot completely filled with a queue exiting the parking lot.
Luckily we found a spot and the key was to be patient because it seemed like there was always someone heading back to their car.

There are a ton of beachgoers here, surfers, beach volleyball players, and dog owners, so despite the large parking lot, it was crowded.
We loved the size of the dog section and the water being shallow enough for our dogs to get in and enjoy the waves. There are also a bunch of big rocks here, so if your dog likes to jump on rocks, this is a great place.
Zooey loves jumping and climbing, so she had a great time here. Kuma also enjoyed rock climbing, trying out a petting zoo, and chasing other dogs.
We spent the weekend in Long Beach and Rosie’s Dog Beach was just a few miles from the super pet friendly hotel we were staying at.
Seaside Barks: Dog Friendly Spots Along The Emerald Coast
When we started searching Google for off-leash beaches in the Los Angeles area, Rosie’s Dog Beach always came up at the top of the search results. This is currently the only legal off-leash dog beach in Los Angeles County.
When we went there around 9:30 on a Saturday morning, there was ample parking and plenty of space for our dogs to run around. For some reason the dogs didn’t seem too excited about this beach.
There was nothing wrong with it and it was clean, but it was a little run down. The sand near the water looked like mud and the dog’s paws and paws looked very muddy every time they went in and out of the water.
Again, not a bad dog beach, but it doesn’t give us or the dogs the same excitement as other beaches.
Dog Friendly Beaches And Parks In The Illawarra
This was our favorite menu item for several reasons. First of all, there was no parking in the area, so the only option was to find street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Getting to the dog section of the beach was a very long walk and when you finally get there the place is very small.
Additionally, just behind you is a long section of wire mesh protecting the US naval base. It seemed like a lot of effort for the long walk from the parking lot to the shore only to end up with poor views and limited space.
That said, many of our friends love this beach and we highly recommend it. If you live close to the area or visit on a non-busy day, it will likely be a much better experience.
