Best Dog Friendly Restaurants Edinburgh – I’m often asked “Is Edinburgh dog friendly?”. Edinburgh is definitely a dog-friendly city. We rarely travel, which means we rarely spend time exploring Scotland’s capital city with the boy. Since we had been waiting for a weekend break, when Hotel Indigo invited us to visit their boutique hotel in York Square, we jumped at the chance.

The hotel is located in a row of Georgian townhouses in the heart of New Town. Shops, restaurants, bars, tourist attractions, parks, etc. are all located on the doorstep of the hotel. Edinburgh mainline train station is within walking distance. The Airport Tram service also stops outside the hotel, so the hotel is an ideal base for exploring Edinburgh.

Hotel Indigo has 60 rooms, ranging from comfortable double rooms to luxury suites. Facilities include a gym, bar and breakfast room. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but there are many at the door, so it is not a big expense.

After leaving the hotel we swapped the Georgian buildings for the hot buildings of the Old Town, the city’s medieval heart.

City Cafe is an American restaurant that has been serving hot dogs, burgers and milkshakes to Edinburgh residents since the early 1980s.

A 1950s jukebox had us squeezed into tables inside and headed straight for a booth. The music is great and the food and drink selections on the menu are even better.

After dinner we walked along the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The palace is the official royal residence of Scotland and was once the home of Mary, Queen of Scots.

Starting from Holyrood, our Old Town walk takes us through New Carlton Cemetery. The picturesque Georgian cemetery features a watchtower designed to deter the mutilators. Many headstones are decorated with skulls and crossbones.

It’s time to relax. The kid was curled up in his doggie bed and Mr. G and I were sitting on our comfy king-size bed watching TV.

The next morning we wake up, get out of bed, shower and get ready for the day. The sun was shining and we were looking forward to a long day wandering around town with the boys – but first, breakfast.

I wasn’t sure what a hotel breakfast would be like without a restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised. A range of breakfast options are available, including a range of cooked options and a range of continental options.

We both opted for cooked breakfasts – I chose the “Full Edinburgh” (excluding beans) which was delicious, especially the haggis. Mr. G ordered his favorite, the Egg Royale, and the dish did not disappoint.

Our first stop was the St. James area, right on the doorstep of our hotel. Galleries are very popular in the summer of 2021, replacing the eyesores of the sixties. The New Gallery attracts many of the high-end shops and restaurants in Edinburgh’s east end.

The gallery is also dog-friendly, with doggy water stations and strollers available for rental, just in case your four-legged friend doesn’t have your shopping stamina. Many shops and restaurants are dog-friendly, including the British John Lewis store we went to.

Inside, the boy made a beeline for the doggy area. Barber and Jules provided snacks, toys and stylish clothes.

After browsing, he selected a sweater and a toy from the Barbour collection. When we moved his stuff to the checkout counter, his little face became a picture.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is just a short walk from Hotel Indigo. This was one of my favorite places in Edinburgh when I was a student, but I haven’t been there for many years. Sitting on the doorstep gave me the perfect opportunity to visit the gallery.

The gallery is not dog-friendly, but there is a tree-lined square next to it, so we took turns visiting, the other sitting with the boy, soaking up the early autumn sunshine.

The National Portrait Gallery of Scotland is a must-see when visiting Edinburgh, not only does it have interesting art depicting famous Scottish figures from across the centuries, but also Robert the Bruce, Mary Queen of Scots, The Proclaimers, Billy Connolly and more . The gallery also houses the interesting (and slightly gruesome) death masks of notorious Edinburgh serial killers Burke and Hare.

Behind Art Coffee is Burr & Co, a stylish coffee shop that welcomes people and food just off Edinburgh’s trendy George Street.

A hop, skip and a jump away from the hustle and bustle of George Street, we arrived at the oasis of Princes Street Gardens. We stopped briefly in the East Garden to listen to a wonderful street performer singing Con Te Partiro (Time to Farewell) in perfect Italian, and then entered the West Garden.

The children’s playground, beautiful fountain and flower-filled cuckoo clock in the West Garden carry my childhood memories. Our arrival was well timed as little Bertie was about to appear. The familiar calls of crows and cuckoos bring me back to my childhood.

After leaving Princes Street Gardens, we headed back into the hustle and bustle of the city and back to the historic Old Town – my favorite place at home.

We heard our second street performer of the day – a bagpiper playing a toe-tapping tune at the intersection of the High Street and the Lawn Market, just before notorious murderer William Burke was hanged for his complicity Directly opposite death. Hale turned over King’s evidence and admitted his guilt in exchange for his freedom.

The High Street is home to some of Edinburgh’s dog-friendly attractions, including the stunning Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, and St Giles’ Cathedral, built in 1124 by King David I. The cathedral is an architectural gem and visiting it is like stepping back in time.

St. Giles has witnessed centuries of Edinburgh’s history – from the attacks of the British army to religious unrest and the rise of the Jacobites. The eyes of the world were on St Giles recently after HRH Queen Elizabeth spent 24 hours there.

The street outside St Giles’ Cathedral is packed with tourists, so now seems like a good time to stop for some liquid refreshments. We walked up Cockburn Street (pronounced Co Burn) up the steep steps (not as scary as it sounds) to Fleshmarket Close.

We are heading to one of our favorite traditional pubs in the Old Town – Jinglin’ Geordie’s Bar.

Jinglin’Geordie’s Bar is one of Edinburgh’s many dog-friendly pubs. It is named after George Herriot, a goldsmith to King James VI. Helio was said to be so rich that his pockets were so full of gold that they jingled when he walked.

We found a table inside and ordered drinks. I had white wine and Mr. G had a local beer – aaaaaand chilled out.
