Read on to learn more about each method and why my pups and I enjoy them so much.
Located about an hour and 15 minutes north of the Twin Cities metro, Banning State Park is one of my favorite Minnesota state parks. The park has 17 miles of excellent trails, including the Hell’s Gate Trail, on the cliffs along the Kettle River.
The Hell’s Gate Trail is the most popular trail in Banning State Park. So, for those of you who don’t like scrambling over rocks because the trail feels more like a hiking trail through the woods, this might not be the trail for you. In that case, I recommend the Quarry Trail combined with the High Bluff Trail to get to Wolf Creek Falls. But for dog/human couples who are up for a little adventure, the Hell’s Gate Trail is a fun afternoon.
The Hell’s Gate Trail can be accessed from Wolf Creek Falls or the south end of the Quarry Loop Trail. Either way, the road will be easy in the beginning. But as you get closer to the middle of the road, the road gets rockier.

At that time you have to choose your own path and climb some rocks and stone steps. Some methods are easier than others, so go back and try again if you find a method you’re not comfortable with. The road is always busy (especially on summer weekends) so you can always see other people coming down the road ahead of you.
While a 6 foot leash (or shorter) is required for walking your dog in MN State Parks, you may need a longer leash for this section. Or a walking partner who holds the walking rope for some sections. Small dogs may need help climbing up and down obstacles in this way. And there is one place I always put my hand on my 40# dog to help him down or up depending on where we are going.
Is this route too difficult for you and your dog? Then check out some of the other trails in Banning State Park. We discuss alternatives to this Minnesota hiking trail in future blog posts:
Located on the Minnesota-Canada border in Grand Portage State Park, the Middle Falls Trail offers beautiful views of Lake Superior and the opportunity to see two waterfalls. Middle Falls is the destination of the lollipop loop that is the Middle Falls Trail. But before you head to Middle Falls, I recommend checking out High Falls, which is near the start of the Middle Falls Trail.

High Falls is Minnesota’s tallest waterfall, dropping 120 feet as the waters of the Pigeon River flow into Lake Superior. The trail to HIgh Falls is wheelchair accessible, but only a few steps to the actual waterfall view.
Once you’ve spent time admiring the top falls, head up the Middle Falls Trail. The Middle Falls Trail is approximately 3.5 miles round trip (4.5 miles round trip from the Visitor’s Center).
The trail begins by climbing beautiful views of Lake Superior and the surrounding forests. Don’t jump on the spur of the moment.
The trail is well maintained, but narrow in parts. And as you get closer to Middle Falls from the beach, it gets smaller.
Trees And Tents
Middle Falls is closer than High Falls. You will cross the river near the rocks on the Canadian side.
Overall, this trail is longer than many trails in Minnesota state parks. Depending on the time of year you visit, this can be a quiet and peaceful way to have fun with your pup. During our trip to the north coast in November 2019, we were very excited to see the frozen waterfalls. Eagle Mountain Road
The highest point of the island is Eagle Mountain, 2,301 meters above sea level. The summit is located in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) and can be reached via a 3.5 mile trail (one way) for a scenic 7 mile hike.
Access to the trailhead, located on the right side of FR170, requires driving on dirt/gravel roads. But driving the famous Hwy 61 on the North Shore means this wilderness road is less traveled than the North Shore state park trails.

Because this procedure is part of the BWCA, you need a permit. For a day trip, you can use a self-guided tour. Directions and permits are available at the kiosk at the trailhead.
The trail itself is nice and rough, with lots of tree roots and rocks to navigate. He passes some beautiful lakes as the trail winds through the forest.
When you reach the top of Eagle Mountain, there are beautiful views. The highest point is surrounded by trees so there is not much to see here. But you can get a picture with the plaque placed at the highest point. Then turn around and go back to the car.
Perhaps one of the most iconic areas on the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT), the Bear and Bean Lake Loop is a popular full-day hike on the SHT. The loop is about 7 miles long if you start there
