Burlington, Vermont is one of New England’s most dog-friendly destinations. With great outdoor adventures and a modern, laid-back downtown, Burlington is a playground for dogs and their companions. You will find lots of fun things to do with your dog. Cycle the Burlington Greenway along the shores of Lake Champlain, then stop to sample local beer at one of the city’s many dog-friendly breweries. Beer venues in Burlington that allow pets include Foam Brewers and Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, while places like Switchback Brewing Co. also allow dogs indoors. Church Street Marketplace, one of New England’s most popular pedestrian (and small) shopping malls, has plenty of dog-friendly dining and shopping options. For pet-friendly accommodations, Made in Vermont, a quaint bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown, offers a comfortable home away from home for you and your dog.
When the dog days of summer roll around, there’s no better place to be with your dog than Cape Cod! With miles of pristine coastline, irresistible laid-back charm and countless outdoor activities, Cape Cod is the perfect summer destination for people and dogs alike. You’ll especially enjoy visiting the Cape Cod National Seashore. This sunny strip of sandy beaches and trails keeps dogs on a lead even in high season. Then quench your thirst at Provincetown Brewing Company. They’re so dog friendly (and socially conscious), the beer garden has a dog house that reads “I bite racism.” There are also many pet-friendly places to stay on the Cape. Pamper your pup at Chatham’s Bars Inn luxury resort or try “shaking it up” with your pup at Nickerson State Park Campground.
Cape Cod National Seashore is one of the many reasons to visit Cape Cod with your dog.
For a beach getaway with your dog, head to Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Just five miles south of Portland, it’s a great place to get away from it all without going too far. At the south end of Fort Williams State Park, home to the iconic Portland Head Light, is a large off-leash grassy area for dogs to run and play. Of course, you can’t visit Maine without trying the local lobster roll, and Bite in Maine has an outdoor food truck in the park with pet-friendly picnic tables. Higgins Beach is a popular place for kids to fry in the sand and splash in the water. After a long day of fun in the sun, relax at the Inn by the Sea, a luxury beach resort that provides excellent care for pets and their owners.

You and your dog will love exploring Nantucket together. This tiny island off the coast of Cape Cod has almost no traffic lights and plenty of typical New England charm. After the ferry ride, you’ll notice many other pet owners sailing by, making it clear that Nantucket is a welcoming place for visitors with dogs. Choose from a wide range of dog-friendly things to do, from strolling the Scenset Bluff Walk to exploring historic lighthouses. The town has plenty of dog-friendly patios, including hot breakfast spot Black-Eyed Susan’s and eclectic American bistro Queequegs. Take a nap at the Brass Lantern Inn B&B Inn, which welcomes four-legged friends to select rooms for a nominal fee.
This wonderfully friendly town in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is a must-see. Known as the Ski Capital of the East, Stowe attracts visitors from far and wide to the world-class resort every winter. But with plenty of outdoor activities in every season, Stowe is the perfect place to vacation with your dog.
For the more adventurous, Smugglers Notch State Park offers miles of trails through a stunning section of the Green Mountains. For something a little more casual (but fun), you and your dog will love taking a stroll on the Stowe Recreational Trail. This 11-mile paved trail is lined with dog-friendly restaurants and breweries. There are also plenty of dog-friendly places in the area for all budgets. Luxury resorts like the Trapp Family Lodge, Topnotch Resort, and The Lodge at Spruce Peak offer creature comforts. But if you’re looking for something more affordable, consider staying with your dog at a field guide lodge or The Stowhof.
