Pet Friendly Lodging Zion – With the red and white walls of Navajo sandstone towering above you 2,000 feet high, tracking your wildlife in Zion National Park is an experience you’ll never forget!
Zion was Utah’s first national park. And as you walk along the Virgin River, looking up at the gigantic sandstone cliffs rising into a bright blue sky, it’s easy to see why! But how much of Zion National Park can you see pets? We did some basic research to answer this question.
Pet Friendly Lodging Zion
Located in southern Utah, not far from Bryce Canyon National Park and Dixie National Forest, Zion is simply stunning. With elevations in the park ranging from 3,600 feet to 8,700 feet, the park preserves a variety of wildlife, plants, and spectacular views.
A Dog Parent Guide To Visiting Zion National Park
The best time to visit Zion National Park with pets is any time but summer! The park is expected to welcome five million tourists in 2021, making it the second most visited park in America. Along with the crowds, Zion’s summer temperatures can be dangerous. During our visit in late August, the height of the canyon floor reached 104 degrees!
For a relaxing visit, consider visiting Zion in winter. Although more than 550,000 visitors arrive at the park during the peak of July, December and January, each historically sees about 1/5 the number of people. Even though it’s the middle of winter, daytime temperatures often reach 54 degrees – perfect weather for exploring with your pup!
Our traveling friends: Plan to go to Zion’s South Gate. Entering the east side of the park means going through a historic tunnel. Almost all RVs, buses, trailers, fifth wheels, two-wheelers, campers, and boats require traffic control, meaning Rangers stop traffic coming your way.
In Zion National Park, Linden animals can accompany you all along the boardwalk. This includes public roads and parking lots, developed campgrounds, all 22 exits to Hwy 9 (Zion – Mount Carmel Hwy), and the Parrus Trail. Additionally, pets are welcome in resort areas and outside of Zion Lodge.

Animals cannot cross other paths, which means Zion’s collective movement is limited. But read on: we have an ideal hiking solution you’ll love!
Finally, pets are not allowed in wilderness areas, buses or park buildings, including Zion Lodge.
There are two entrances to Zion National Park, the East Gate and the South Gate. If you arrive at the East Gate, you will immediately be immersed in the statue’s landscape. If so, go to the visitor center. But stop at each of the outcrops to look at the large cream, red and pink sandstone boulders.
When visiting Zion National Park with a pet, be sure to check out the visitor center. Pets are not allowed inside, so practice by watching the orientation film and 22-minute presentations. Grab your BARK Ranger pet tag and it’s time to hit the road!
Where To Stay Near Zion With Kids: 17 Kid Friendly Lodging Options
From the visitor center, cross the road and bridge over the river to take the Pa’Rus nature trail. Following the Virgin River across the river, the trail continues for 2.9 miles to Canyon Junction.
Plan to spend a few hours hiking the trail. Or take a picnic and have plenty of time. And for a long hike, read the section on Zion Canyon.
If you’re visiting Zion with your pet during the summer, plan to hike the Pa’rus Trail early in the morning or around sunset.
He’s hot! And there isn’t much shade. And freezing the river is not an option. Zion is aware of the presence of harmful cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in the park’s Virgin River. This poison can be present at any time, so keep your dogs on a leash and away from water.

It’s also a good idea to shoehorn your dog! There are several bridges along the Pa’rus Trail, and on sunny days the composite deck gets very hot. Before your pet walks on the bridges, touch the surface to ensure it doesn’t burn the bags.
If you arrive at Zion’s South Gate, after visiting the visitor center and walking the Pa’rus Trail, drive to the East Gate and take a detour along the way.
The main attraction of Zion National Park is Zion Canyon. The famous hanging gardens, waterfalls and Zion Lodge are located here. During most of the year, access to Zion Canyon is open to buses only. Animals are not allowed in cargo.
Of course, you might take a paddleboat to see Zion Canyon by accident. Or you can find a daycare or pet boarding place for your cruise companion. But if you want to see Zion Canyon with your pet, you have two options.
Lodging In Zion National Park
First you have to walk or cycle. Pets are welcome on all sidewalks in Zion. And for most of the year, the only traffic on the Syon Canyon Scenic Drive is buses. Take the Pa’rus Trail 2.9 miles from the Visitor Center to Canyon Junction, where the road closure begins. From this point it is 9.5 miles to Sinawava Temple at the end of the road.
Your second option is to visit Zion when the buses are not operating. (This is why we originally suggest planning your trip in December or January!)
Zion bus service closes from late November until just before Christmas. During this time, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is open to private vehicles. It’s your window to ride the famous canyon with your best friend. Just remember that animals stay on sidewalks or sidewalks.
The town of Springdale is conveniently located outside the southern entrance to Zion. With pet-friendly hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, and dog parks, it’s a welcoming place for anyone traveling with pets.

Stop by the visitor center for some tips and lunch or dinner! We found the pet-friendly patio at Oscar’s Cafe to be the perfect place to grab a bite to eat.
To see a less popular part of Zion National Park with your pet, continue west on Hwy 9 to Kolob Terrace Road and then head north. The 25-mile hike climbs from 3,550 feet to 8,118 feet and traverses in and out of the national park. But it’s the views that make driving a pleasure!
You will pass several roads along the way. Unfortunately, pets are prohibited on all roads. But there is a tourist spot and check out Lava Point that is worth checking out!
At the end of the road is the Kolob reservoir. Not only is it an amazing body of water, the temperature here is about 20 degrees cooler than it was in Springdale the day we visited!
Best Zion National Park Places To Stay For Families
Private campgrounds surround the reservoir, but most sites were open on the day of our visit. There are also boat and kayak rentals, canoes and paddle boards. It would be a great place to spend the day!

Both places offer great walks. Or head to our favorite area of Dixie – Red Canyon. The good news is that all Dixie trails are pet-friendly!
