She recently took one of her cats, “Little Friend,” to be spayed and neutered at the MABEL Humane Society of Summit County’s mobile veterinary clinic. On this day, a clinic was set up in the parking lot of Pet Supplies Plus in Stowe.

MABEL, which stands for “Better Animals and Enriching Lives,” is a free-standing, 28-foot mobile veterinary clinic that travels throughout Summit County to provide low-cost spay/neuter, vaccination and microchip services to local communities.
When she heard about MABEL at the Portage County APL, she recommended calling the Humane Society immediately and requesting an appointment.
What you need to know The Humane Society of Summit County has launched MABEL, a free-standing, 28-foot mobile veterinary clinic. Mabel travels throughout the county providing affordable spay/neuter, vaccination and microchip services. MABEL’s goal is to ultimately serve a different area of Summit County each week. The Humane Society checks local prices for veterinary services and ensures that MABEL offers the lowest prices.
Ultimately, MABEL tries to reach different parts of Summit County 52 times a year and offers multiple clinics each week, said Kristin Branagan, the Humane Society’s chief operating officer.
Pawsitively Free Pet Vaccine & Microchip Clinic
MABEL’s services have been so well received that the humane society will eventually need to expand them, she said.
MABEL’s schedule will be posted on the Humane Society’s website and social media so people can sign up for spay/neuter appointments or be put on a waiting list when spots become available, Branagan said. No appointment is necessary for the Immunization and Microchip Clinic.
Dogs and cats have separate spay and neuter days to reduce stress levels, she added. At each clinic, MABEL can perform approximately eight dog surgeries and 20 cat surgeries, although these numbers may vary.
But low price doesn’t mean low quality, Branagan said. The MABEL team consists of trained humane society staff and a rotating group of resident veterinarians.
What Are Mobile Veterinary Clinics?
“The vets who do this are very skilled and they do it every day, multiple times a day, so they provide such a high level of care,” she said. “However, low prices can sometimes make people nervous, but they don’t have to be. We have a very skilled and talented team.”
Casey Hengle, MABEL project coordinator and board certified veterinarian, said residents appreciate MABEL coming to them and not having to go to Twinsburg, where the humane society is, which can be difficult for some.
Hengle said that when developing MABEL’s business plan, the Humane Society looked at local prices for veterinary services and made sure MABEL offered the lowest price.
“Most of the people we talked to and planned were overwhelmed by the price alone,” she said. – Then I found out we were moving.
Low Cost Veterinary Service
One way the agency keeps prices reasonable is by not requiring all animals to have blood tests before anesthesia, which can significantly increase costs, she added. Although underlying health problems don’t always show up in blood tests, many vets require them.
Before the operation, the MABEL team performs a thorough examination of each animal and prepares it for several procedures.
Hengle said that while the animals are under anesthesia, technicians clean their ears, trim their nails and even give them a free flea treatment.
Veterinary assistant Cora Bowser works with Hengle. She added that she hears a lot of stories because she interacts with everyone who brings animals to the service.
Affordable Pet Vaccine Clinic Coming To Whiteford August 10
“It’s going to be a good day if a few people don’t have any problems,” Bowser said. “Mostly it happens to everyone, whether it’s a lack of money, a death in the family or an elderly person who doesn’t have money or a car.”
“We want to keep the animals inside and we want to reduce the population, so we’re going to do everything we can,” she said.
The organization said the Humane Society receives at least 50 calls a month from residents seeking veterinary care, with more than half seeking low-cost spay/neuter services. Lack of access to affordable veterinary care is one of the main reasons people surrender their pets to shelters.
To keep up with demand, the Humane Society is developing a coupon program that offers reduced fees or free services to eligible residents, Branagan said.

Project MABEL, which cost approximately $200,000, was a gift to the humane society from the Cynthia Parker Matthews Family Foundation with support from donors throughout the community.
Branagan said the humane society named the MABEL clinic after the Mathews family, who had a Great Dane named Mabel.
MABEL works with MAC, the Humane Society’s mobile adoption center. To learn more about the Humane Society of Summit County or to schedule an appointment, visit their website.
