U.S. national parks offer a variety of valuable opportunities and experiences. But walking freely with your four-legged best friend isn’t always one of them! But there are parks where they can enjoy with you. In this article, we share five dog-friendly US national parks where you can hike with your pup.

I’m a national park junkie, dog lover, and love taking my “main man” everywhere. I also prefer to go places where he can come with me. (Except for annual trips abroad to places like Greece, Patagonia, or Costa Rica!)

Dogs are welcome at almost all national parks in the United States, but what they can and can’t do varies greatly. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit almost every national park in the US without my dog ​​(as of this writing, my number is 56/63, along with others in Alaska and Samoa). We stayed in this long, narrow Virginia National Park for 10 days while hiking the 110 miles of the Appalachian Trail. The AT grades are relatively less steep in this park than most of the AT and are perfect for walking dogs. Big Meadows Lodge has pet-friendly rooms, and we had tons of dogs at all three of our campsites. Campgrounds in the park offer trailside access, which are much shorter hikes when we’re not on the AT. Overall, this park is accessible from Washington, Baltimore, and many other cities on the East Coast. You can feel good knowing your dog can go outside and explore. Of all the dog-friendly American national parks I’ve visited, this might be the best.

From the Endless Walls Trail in Long Point to the Kaimur Miners, this West Virginia national park is known for its rafting, nearby rock climbing, and biking opportunities. There are also great dog-friendly hiking trails.

The city of Fayetteville is a quirky, funky little town full of makers, artists, breweries, and cafes. We stayed at this Sasquatch themed airbnb with a HUGE pet friendly fenced yard.

Cotopaxi probably won’t be able to raft the New River anytime soon (his canoe and kayak experiences are sketchy at best). But she loves hiking in NRG and it was great to visit this new national park.

Cotopaxi’s first national park was also his first tent experience and our first trip with him. The National and State Parks border each other and we attended 3 Dune Challenges that were technically within the State Park. According to their website, “lead pets are allowed in both national and state parks. Dogs are welcome at all beaches except West Beach and lifeguard swimming areas in the State Park. It is also allowed on all trails except the Pinhook Bog Trail and the Glenwood Dune Trail System.

This is an often overlooked US national park. It is close to Chicago and accessible to most of the Great Lakes region. We camped at Dunewood Campground, and from there you can hike and bike along the shores of Beverly along Lake Michigan. Don’t forget to eat great food at Goblin and Market (just a short walk from the campsite).

One summer, we lived in two different towns in northern Michigan, bordering this beautiful Lake Michigan National Seashore.

And that included road maintenance, cleaning, and a few other things. This has allowed me and Cotopaxi to be on the road all the time. We had tons of dog trails, from Pyramid Point to Empire Bluff, Platte River Trails to Alligator Hill. The two non-dog-friendly trails I did were Dune Climb and Sleeping Bear Point.

The climbs and descents are also suitable for dogs. The small towns around Sleeping Bear (Franklin, Interlochen, Empire, Leelanau, Leland, Northport, and others) were also dog-friendly.

Cotopaxi in Joshua Tree National Park is one of MANY low-traffic dirt roads that are perfect for Yucca hiking!

For example, we currently live in Joshua Tree, California, right next to the National Park. Dogs are allowed to walk/walk on the dirt paths there (which we do often), but not on the trails. The reason for this is that the water resources on the sheep roads are becoming extinct. Resources are critical to their survival and they view dogs as a threat. Sheep do not go to water sources if they smell/see/hear dogs nearby. Death Valley and Saguaro are two other parks he has visited, but he is not allowed to hike the trails. Then there are parks like the Grand Canyon. There are many trails that he is not allowed to enter, but he can walk the entire Roman Road. The Grand Canyon is a big place, you know, all it needs is the Rim Trail. LONG.

Super friendly like the ones on our list, limited but possible like the Grand Canyon, and ones where you have to get creative or stay home like Joshua Tree.

If you insist on walking with your dog and do not want to return, national forests are just for you! These are much less strict about where and when your dog can be walked (always on a leash with poop bags, of course), but you and your dogs can really keep an eye on him.

Visiting national parks and being able to bring your dog with you is an unforgettable experience. Depending on how you want to spend your time, you should still decide with them which park to visit. And should he leave them at home or at a friend’s house?
