We’ve compiled our ranking based on a few key factors that most pet owners look for when moving. To keep the data as objective as possible, we chose to use only key points for which data were available from public sources for each city.

We also look at other considerations, such as walking and temperature, that don’t meet our criteria but are useful for pet owners when moving to a new city.

Our rankings are only a small part of the overall story and highlight some of the pet affordability factors you may face when moving to a new city.

There are many things to consider when finding dog-friendly cities for your animal companion. We’ve highlighted a few key factors that we can obtain quantitative data to share with you, but there are also many other qualitative factors to consider before deciding whether a city is pet-friendly.

Data are normalized to 100,000 inhabitants for each city’s population. The higher the number, the more concentrated this factor is.

To conduct this study, we first decided which cities to include based on the availability of data for the top 50 cities in three size ranges:

Capturing the range of city sizes is important because comparing the rankings of smaller cities (eg, Waco, Texas) to larger cities (eg, Chicago, Illinois) is like comparing apples to oranges. Each city size range has very different access to amenities, exercise options, and costs (discussed below).

Dog Parks (0 to 100 points): We obtained dog park data from the Trust for Public Land website. We used their ParkServe search function to get data from the 150 cities we looked at and came up with their index score by counting the number of dog parks per capita.

Dog Friendly Trails (0-100 points): Trail information found on the AllTrails hiking and trail website. We searched for a specific city and set the filter on “dog-friendly trails” to get data for this metric.

Dog-friendly hotels (0-100 points): We used Google Travel to find dog-friendly hotels in each city and calculated a score based on the city’s population.

Dog-friendly restaurants (0-100 points): The BringFido.com directory helped us find dog-friendly restaurants in each city, and then we counted them per capita.

Dog Rentals (0-100 points): We pulled rental data using Realtor.com to find the most up-to-date information about dog-friendly homes and apartments available for rent in each city. We calculated per capita (100,000 population) data.

Pet Sitters (0 to 100 points): We used the SitterCity Directory to determine the number of dog sitters per capita in each city.

Price of dog insurance (0 to 100 points): We collected data on dog insurance prices by searching the Figo website. We were able to standardize the data by creating a pooled pup with a constant insurance rate (male, two years old, 90% coverage, $5,000 in benefits with a $500 deductible).
